Long Live the King of Rock n Roll : New Documentary
This Saturday at 8 p.m., HBO is showing a new documentary about the king of rock n roll, Elvis Presley. It is a three hour doc about his creative process with music up to his last recording sessions. (Here is the link to the trailer The Searcher) There is already a ton of documentaries about Elvis and it will be exciting to see if this film goes beyond the ordinary. Elvis Presley is the highest selling solo artist recorded ever in the world with over 600 million sales. He has yet to be defeated and his close runner up is Michael Jackson (however he only has around 350 million). Elvis deserves all the credit he receives because he is so remarkable. He was able to combine country, blues, and gospel to his music while his performances, that were seen as very sexual, would cause a roar in the crowd. While rock and roll was just beginning, Elvis was able to lead the new movement and become the heartthrob of everyone. The internet, books, and documentaries have so much information about his life that you can really know everything about him and his life. People have even preserved the house he was born in and of course people continue to visit his home, Graceland. He tragically died in 1977 at the young age of 42 because of a heart attack, but many question his death because of his fame and drug use later in his career. He had one child, Lisa Marie Presley, who by coincidence had a relationship with Michael Jackson. During the trailer of the new documentary, I found it interesting that they said everyone tried to profit off of him and it made it seem like only the record companies put this immense pressure on him just for the wealth he generated. While this may be true, Priscilla Presley, Elvis ex wife, has had no problem profiting of the stories of him all her life with interviews, writing books, and making sure she kept her last name Presley. However, this is just my opinion because I find it hard to believe no one accuses her of taking credit for him. Anyhow, despite my shade towards Priscilla, Elvis was a great man and I could write a whole book myself about him and how great he is. It also helps that he is handsome, has a great voice, and is extremely talented. I would recommend watching this new documentary about him and maybe some more docs on YouTube as well as his music. You will fall for him. Trust me. (Here is some of my favorite Elvis songs : Return to Sender (this video is just amazing), That's Alright , Heartbreak Hotel , Good Luck Charm , Hound Dog , Blue Suede Shoes
